Project: Tents Turkey & Syria Appeal
As you know, we went to Turkey for the earthquake appeal on February 28th through March 4th. We saw the devastating effects of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake, as well as the Syrian refugees on the border of Turkey. We are still trying to process everything we saw, but we are determined to continue our work.
Alhamdulillah, we have now been given land in Turkey for 1265 tents. This will be a short-term housing solution (could be anything from a year to 2 years).
Background
Due to Turkish government policy, we have partnered with the Turkish government, Turkish army, and the local government in Hatay-Erzin. Through this collaborative approach with Hope for Mankind, we secured the help of 1265 earthquake-affected families, Turkish and Syrian nationals.
How your donations helped
We raised enough money to purchase 200 tents, mattresses, blankets, heaters, food packs and were able to co-ordinate a Zakaat cash distribution. We have also secured the land and are working on setting up the tent city. We also secured the essential items required for the food and hygiene packs which are in scarce supply due to the current surge in demand. This was then distributed on our recent trip (28th of February to the 4th of March) to the most vulnerable.
Who was involved
We would like to thank each person who supported us in this project, which is the largest project undertaken by Hope for Mankind to date. This project has been made possible by the support of many people, including donors, volunteers, the Turkish authorities, and those who have shared our work to raise awareness.
What is planned for the next phase
The next phase of this project will focus on the longer-term rebuilding of the lives of those who have been affected. Along with Hope for Mankind, we will continue to provide relief and also look for ways to alleviate poverty, especially for those who were already impoverished, such as the huge Syrian refugee population residing in Turkey.
With your support to spread awareness and donations, we aim to purchase and setup a further 1065 tents in the land provided by the Turkish authorities:
The cost of each family tent + contents = £500:
- Food pack
- Hot meal
- Mattress
- Blanket
The local government will provide water supply. This will allow families that are currently living separately to reunite and live in a secure place which will be managed by the Erzin local council and Hope for Mankind. We will also be working with mosques and other charities to continue to support this tent city.
